Acesta este numit de Sfantul Athanasie fondator al monahismului. Sf. Antonie -a nascut in anul 251 in localitatea Coma, in Egiptul de Mijloc, din parinti crestini. Dupa o perioada de ucenicie, la 35 de ani, se retrage la marginea desertului, in locul numit Pispir, unde a ramas timp de 20 de ani, pana in 306. Aici s-a impotrivit ispitelor si a luptat contra demonilor care luau infatisari de animale salbatice. Dupa o vreme se retrage din singuratatea sihastreasca si intemeiaza o comunitate de eremiti.
